Parent Conversations
Parent Conversations are small peer-led gatherings for parents focused on how parents can help their children succeed in school. The Parent Conversations convey a common message of respect and support. They were designed to engage parents in a range of community settings, sometimes including the school, specifically around their own children’s early language learning. The focus of the Conversations is on building comfort among parents, through informal talks, about their basic relationship to the school. Parent Conversations are one answer to meeting the school’s goal of increased parent engagement.

REPLICATION MODEL
From its inception, LINC has been working to develop a model that can be replicated in other urban settings. We have also begun to document LINC’s model and approach, so that what we have learned can be shared with other New York City and New York State school districts.

CONNECTING
WITH CHILDREN IN THE AFTERMATH of 9/11
How
can LINC help young children deal with the aftershocks of Sept 11th?
What can we contribute that is meaningful and supports LINC's mission?
These questions, asked by Ann Sand of the LINC Board of Directors,
put in motion LINC's "Connecting With Children in the Aftermath
of 9/11" initiative. Ms. Sand, actively involved in all aspects
of this project, was instrumental in seeking and receiving $10,000
from the Sirus Foundation for the realization of the project.

TEEN
TUTORS
LINC’s Teen Tutor Reading Partner Program provides another way to more effectively carry out our mission. Through this program, middle school and high school students tutor elementary school students one-on-one in reading at least once a week in schools and afterschool programs in many of the city’s low-income areas. The program seeks to improve the academic skills and self-esteem of all participating students. Over the past six years, the Teen Tutor Reading Partner Program has grown from 87 tutors and 112 students in three boroughs to 853 teens reading with 1093 young children in 48 programs in Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Staten Island, and Hudson, New York. Last year alone, the program provided 9,957 additional reading hours to its participants. In October of 2004, the Teen Tutor Reading Partner Program was awarded a Youth in Action Award from the New York Life Foundation for its work in Brooklyn.
