Getting a Head Start on Reading in Poe Park

The Bronx is ready to read!

It’s a long road to get to a child’s first day of school, and we at LINC know the importance of ensuring families feel supported during the early years before their children reach the classroom. On August 22nd, LINC partnered with NYC Parks, Fidelis Care, the New York Public Library, the Fire Department of New York, and other community organizations to equip Bronx families with the knowledge and resources that their children need to excel.

LINC and our partners set up a ring of stations around Poe Park creating a Bronx Back to School event where families received free backpacks, books, and other free materials designed to get their kids reading and ready to learn. Families were so excited that we nearly ran out of backpacks and books to give away!

Councilmember Oswald Feliz made sure to join the celebration, and talked with families about their reading routines at home, and suggested resources to build their confidence. Whether it is Spanish, English, or any language, spending twenty minutes a day together reading makes an enormous impact on a young child’s lifelong outcomes. Learning vital literacy skills at an early age helps ensure students continue to excel at reading, math, science, and social studies.

“It can feel isolating and overwhelming,” said one parent who recently immigrated to the United States and is raising a three-year old with autism, “seeing something like this in the community helps. It is good to know that there are opportunities, and other parents going through similar experiences.”

We know that each caretaker’s journey is different, and we strive to meet families where they are, building emotional bonds and encouraging them to feel they are an essential part of their neighborhood, their block, their building. Together, we are working to build a city where literacy is visible and valued for all children, regardless of nationality, race, gender, or disability status.

Thank you to all the families and partners who joined us to make this summer’s Bronx Back to School event a success! We wish you the best as you begin a new school year and we hope to see you again real soon.
