Literacy Inc. (LINC), an award-winning early literacy non-profit and One World Observatory, a renowned attraction with panoramic views of New York City, present Reading on the Rails: Cities, Skylines and Subways, a reading program and literary adventure in celebration of National Summer Learning Week (July 10-14)! National Summer Learning Week elevates the importance of keeping kids learning, safe, and healthy every summer, a concept that LINC embraces every year to ensure children succeed in school and life. One of this year’s themes, a Love of Literacy & Learning, is exactly what LINC’s Reading on the Rails is all about. This program brings families together from all five boroughs as they travel sharing the joy of reading on New York City’s Public Transportation System* and meet at a final destination to continue learning through fun activities and more children’s books. This year, families will converge 1,250 feet in the sky at One World Observatory to enjoy views of the city’s most iconic sites - a source of endless inspiration. Families will read, learn about the sites they see, engage in a number of interactive architectural activities, and thanks to the support of children’s book publisher Penguin Random House, they will all receive books to take home.
At LINC, learning does not start and end with the school year. LINC’s programs help families, with children from birth through five years of age, build community around reading, and connect with resources that already exist in their communities to access educational resources. By inspiring families to read daily and providing them with a strong early literacy foundation, LINC reduces educational disparities. LINC makes literacy a value and a right for all children. With endless summer outdoor activities; LINC shows that families can read while they travel all summer long! NYC’s public transportation gives children an opportunity to read, enrich their experiences, and elevate their imaginations.
