Whether you “Take the A Train” or a harbor cruise on the Staten Island ferry, you will be in good company on July 16th. That’s the day Literacy in Community (LINC), an award-winning early literacy nonprofit, will hold its 10th annual Reading on the Rails: On the Move event. Presented in partnership with One World Observatory, and with the support of lovino Enterprises, this city-wide reading adventure coincides with National Summer Learning Week. Reading on the Rails: On the Move demonstrates in real time how literacy can take place anywhere and everywhere, inspiring all parents and communities to embrace how they can promote learning and literacy with children in ordinary places and ways throughout the summer months.
Unstructured time spent away from learning leads to a well-documented “summer slide” and a loss of proficiency as children enter school age; the impact is gravest for low-income children. LINC’s community literacy model is an antidote. LINC creates community around reading, connecting families with each other and with educational resources that already exist in their communities. Children experience books and reading as fun at the same time they build skills and routines that will make them “school-ready.” This is reading that can take place anywhere - on the subway or bus; in bodegas and markets; in the laundromat and in waiting rooms; in local parks and playgrounds. Imagine families from eight distinct neighborhoods across the city, traveling on public transit and reading their way to a common destination. LINC families make reading visible and valued and empowers families to read everywhere and Reading on the Rails: On the Move proves it! On July 16, LINC will celebrate reading with a host of activities that include a NYC landmark building scavenger hunt, entertainment from Bilingual Birdies, and storytime with guest author, Susie Jaramillo, the charismatic co-founder and creative force behind the children’s book publisher Encantos and the bilingual learning brand Canticos. All families will receive free copies of Susie Jaramillo’s book, La Bamba, literacy activity sheets, and goody bags to take home.
“As an avid subway rider I’ve been reading on the train for as long as I can remember. A book is a child's best friend, at home, on the go or anywhere!”— Susie Jaramillo, author, co-founder/CEO of Encantos
