Unidos: Literacy Inc. and Partners Honor Hispanic Heritage Month

Updated: Oct 11, 2022

Literacy Inc. (LINC) joins our dedicated community partners to present Unidos: Inclusivity for a Stronger Nation–a community celebration in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month. This celebration will be held at Assembly Member Manny de los Santos’ office, 210 Sherman Avenue, in Northern Manhattan on Friday, October 14 at 2:00pm.

Unidos includes an afternoon of music, dancing, singing, face painting, local cuisine, and our favorite pastime, reading. Published in both English and Spanish versions, the story Dreamers by the Mexican author, Yuyi Morales (Holiday House) has been specially chosen for this day of unity, to recognize and celebrate the many contributions, diverse cultures, and extensive histories of NYC families from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. Activities to enhance knowledge, understanding and peace will be integrated throughout the day; families will leave with souvenirs and giveaways to remember this message..

Diversity through Literature is a common theme running through LINC’s literacy programs. LINC seeks to promote diverse representation of characters in children’s books, and to cultivate unique perspectives on inclusion and equity. We use diversity as a lens to help families understand the benefits of pre-reading activities and their relationship to a child's healthy development. We want children to see themselves reflected in the books they read, take pride in their heritage, and welcome a world of possibilities. From September 15 to October 15, we honor the Hispanic authors, illustrators, and families that make our community strong.
