Reading and Transformation: Julia Danced the Bomba
Thanks to LINC’s continued partnership with the Saint Barnabas Hospital WIC program, the Fordham community held another successful virtual reading event on Tuesday, April 27. This time, Julia Danced the Bomba and so did we as guest author and storyteller Dr. Raquel Ortiz brought an Afro-Latino musical tradition to life. Engaging community stakeholders is at the heart of LINC’s mission and we were proud to have NYC Councilmember Fernando Cabrera open this program with a few words about the importance of early literacy and the work we are doing in the community. “I will continue to support your work because you are making a difference. I love the work you guys are doing. You are life transformers. You come in right at the gap where so many times we see a need and I salute you for that work.” Who wouldn’t want to dance after that introduction? Young faces lit up as Dr. Raquel Ortiz read When Julia Danced the Bomba and led us in an exploration of the rhythms of this traditional Puerto Rican dance accompanied by drums and percussion. Families could not wait to participate in a fun musical activity with their own homemade instruments. Julia Danced the Bomba is a solid reminder of music’s power to transform our moods and impact our sense of freedom and happiness just like reading does! Do you feel like dancing? Read with us.
