Literacy Inc. joins the world in mourning the loss of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a towering champion of gender equity. We are grateful for her work and legacy. As an attorney, Ruth Bader Ginsburg understood that discrimination based on gender violated the equal protection clause of the constitution and successfully argued that this was harmful both to individuals and our collective society. As a Supreme Court jurist, she reached her conclusions – often dissenting opinions – with that guiding principle foremost. The consequences of her courtroom victories are empowering for all, but most particularly women and people affected by systemic inequities. Born and raised in Brooklyn, Ruth Bader Ginsburg was a reader. She valued the power of literacy and realized books played an important role in her achievement. "Reading," as she stated, “ is the key that opens doors to many good things in life. Reading shaped my dreams, and more reading helped me make my dreams come true.” As board members of Literacy Inc., an early literacy organization that works with families in communities affected by systemic poverty, we are deeply appreciative of her enduring contributions to creating equality. Our own work ensures that all children, particularly those who have been deprived of a quality early childhood education, have access to a strong early literacy foundation so that they too can unlock their potential and achieve their highest aspirations. At LINC, we use literacy to shape dreams and open doors for children across the five boroughs of New York City. We empower parents with the skills and confidence to support their children in acquiring literacy, and train the most engaged parents to become literacy ambassadors--role models for other families in their community. Our work ensures that all children grow up with books and become curious lifelong learners. Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s quest for equality inspires us. We honor her memory and are thankful for all she did to improve the lives of Americans.
