LINC in the Media: LINC's Diversity Through Literacy Campaign Featured on CUNY TV’s EdCast Program

Updated: May 29

On Monday, May 20, Literacy in Community’s (LINC) Chief Program Officer Laura Walsh joins children’s author Susie Jaramillo for an interview with literacy expert and CUNY professor Dr. Linda Hirsch on EdCast, a program created by educators to explore today’s most pressing education issues.

Dr. Hirsch reached out to LINC when she learned about LINC's recent annual Diversity through Literacy campaign. The discussion focused on the significant impact of early literacy, the changes in children's representation in literature, and the continuing challenges in publishing these types of books.

Books operate as windows and mirrors and for children to be exposed to opportunities to see themselves and the world around them, and this is critical in their earliest years when they are making meaning of the world. It was an honor to showcase LINC’s Diversity through Literacy campaign across NYC on EdCast and a privilege to share the stage with one of our dedicated guest authors and partners, Susie Jaramillo who has been a tremendous influence on this industry.”--LINC’s Chief Program Officer Laura Walsh

Susie Jaramillo is the co-founder and creative force behind the children’s book publisher Encantos and the bilingual learning brand Canticos. She was a guest author and key participant in LINC’s recent Diversity Through Literacy campaign, where she shared copies of her bilingual board book, Los Politos

We believe in LINC’s commitment to nurturing a culture of literacy in the community and are proud to support them with our bilingual Canticos Books, bringing music, joy and a whole world of learning to families,” said Susie Jaramillo.

Both Laura and Susie agreed it is important to start reading to children from birth or even before they are born and offered a number of tips for parents.

The episode is titled: Is that Me? The Need for Diverse Voices in Children's Books and you won't want to miss it!  Tune in to watch it on CUNY TV (#75) Spectrum and Optimum Cable; RCN (#77); Verizon FiOS (#30); WNYE (#25.3).
