Literacy Inc.’s Very Involved Parents (VIPs) are at the heart of the work we do promoting early childhood literacy throughout the five boroughs of New York City. On Friday, August 7, LINC held the 2020 Fordham VIP Summer Celebration to highlight the commitment of our VIPs in the Fordham neighborhood of The Bronx.
Led by LINC’s Fordham Community Coordinator, Evelyn Cabreja, more than 20 parents joined us online for a celebration that included a movement activity, readings, and testimonials given by the VIPs. Felicia Batista started out the program on the right foot with a fun song and dance. Julia Hernandez and her daughter Cindy recorded themselves reading Book Fiesta, a wonderful story that celebrates the joy of reading. Margarita Ortega shared her experiences with LINC and how those interactions have had a positive effect on her children’s education.
We also held a workshop and conversation with the parents to discuss ways they can continue to be literacy ambassadors in their community during the pandemic. Led by Albania Jimenez and Inez Martinez, the workshop focused on LINC’s virtual programs and creating content that LINC's VIPs can share with their community from the comfort of their own homes.
Last but not least, a special guest joined us to congratulate the VIPs and to let them know that their valuable work will not go unnoticed. New York State Assembly Member Victor Pichardo joined the program to express his gratitude to LINC’s VIPs and honor them for dedication throughout the pandemic.
In a typical summer, LINC arranges a grand picnic to celebrate our VIPs, and we could not let a year go by without recognizing their important work. This year, we recreated the festivities online to salute our VIPs for their commitment to their families. The pandemic won't stop LINC's Very Involved Parents from coming together to ensure a valuable education for their children and a prosperous future for their community.
Thank you to all of our LINC VIPs. You make our mission possible.
