On Saturday, February 10, 2024, Literacy in Community joined over 300 attendees from 20 different grassroots organizations for Councilmember Carmen De La Rosa's inaugural Uptown People's Assembly–a groundbreaking event rooted in the principles of co-governance and participatory democracy.
Councilmember De La Rosa’s District 10 includes three LINC communities: Kingsbridge, Washington Heights, and Inwood, Seven LINC staff and Very Involved Parents (VIPs) were proud to participate in discussions on legislation, policy, projects, and budgets that will impact a number of the neighborhoods in which they live and work.
After introductory remarks by Councilmember De La Rosa, the People’s Theatre Project offered an interpretive presentation of individual experiences for new arrivals. A panel speaking on the meaning and opportunities that can emerge from community collaboration followed. After tasty bag lunches provided by Cafe Buunni, the Assembly separated into topical breakout groups covering housing, small business, environment & health, youth & education, as well as arts and culture. It was an extraordinary opportunity to share ideas and lay the groundwork for a plan.
LINC was both proud to sponsor and participate in the Assembly and looks forward to seeing the ideas and workshop solutions that were generated be implemented in the larger District 10 Action Plan as it takes shape.
Thank you to Carmen De La Rosa for your commitment to building a community-driven government. In order to make early education a community priority in this process, we encourage you to respond to the survey circulated at the event and online.
LINC staff in attendance included: Albania Jimenez, Senior Director of Family & Community Mobilization; Sarah Morgridge, Senior Manager of Advancement; Michelle Vidals, Northern Manhattan Early Childhood Collaborative (NMECC) Program Manager; Alma Canete, Neighborhood Manager, Upper Manhattan; Rocio Apolonio, Family Engagement Specialist, Inwood; Very Involved Parents (VIPs) Sandra and Carlos Patricio.
