Senators Schumer and Gillibrand Secure Early Literacy Funding

LINC is proud to announce that Senator Chuck Schumer and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand championed and secured $800,000 in support of LINC’s Community Literacy Model as part of the federal budget President Biden signed into law on December 29, 2022. We celebrate the US Senate’s prioritization of children and its recognition of the critical role literacy plays in advancing equity and democracy. Literacy is the key to all learning. Access to quality early literacy programming provides children with a strong foundation to start school ready to thrive and ensures their well-being and success beyond school.

This one-time grant will enhance LINC’s family and community engagement across eight neighborhoods in New York City through the development of mobile technology to improve outreach, program registration, and data collection. These program improvements will deepen our impact and connect more constituent families in the neighborhoods of Marble Hill/Kingsbridge and Fordham in the Bronx, South Jamaica in Queens, East Harlem, Washington Heights and Inwood in Manhattan, East New York in Brooklyn, and across the North Shore of Staten Island. “ I was proud to secure $800,000 for LINC’s critical work improving literacy through their innovative Community Literacy Model, ” said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer . “ As a child growing up in Sheepshead Bay, I benefited tremendously from being surrounded by family and mentors who encouraged my love of reading, so I commend LINC for all the work that they do to create similar opportunities for children in high-need communities. Our youngest generation is the future of our great democracy, and thanks to LINC and this award, I hope that future will be a little bit brighter .”

On behalf of our board, our staff, and most especially, our families, we thank Senator Schumer and Senator Gillibrand for their leadership, advocacy, and support of our important mission. LINC’s Community Literacy Model empowers families and mobilizes the community to equip children with foundational literacy skills essential for academic achievement. P.S. Read the media release .
